Lip Fillers: What They Are, How Long They Last & the Best Aftercare

So you're thinking about lip fillers — or maybe you've already had them and want to make sure you're getting the most out of your results. Either way, you're in the right place. Lip fillers are one of the most popular treatments we offer here at LIBRUM, and it's easy to see why. They're quick, effective, and when done well, they can enhance your natural shape in a way that feels genuinely *you*.

Let's walk through everything you need to know.

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are a non-surgical treatment that uses a soft, injectable gel — most commonly hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body — to add volume, definition, and shape to the lips. Whether you want a subtle boost, a more defined Cupid's bow, or a fuller pout, the results can be tailored entirely to what you want.

The treatment itself takes around 30–45 minutes, and because we use topical numbing cream beforehand, most people find it far more comfortable than they expected. This is one of those treatments where the anticipation is usually worse than the reality.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

Most lip fillers last anywhere from 6 to 12 months, though this varies quite a bit from person to person. Some clients find their results hold beautifully for closer to a year; others notice things softening sooner. Neither is a problem — it's just how your body works.

What Affects How Long Your Results Last?

A few things can influence how long your filler stays put:

  • Type of filler used. Different products have different consistencies and longevities. At LIBRUM, we only use CE-marked products with proven results — we'll always talk you through which product we're using and why. We also prefer filler with zero BDDE’s (impurities) as they produce a LOT less swelling.
  • Your metabolism. People with faster metabolisms tend to break down hyaluronic acid more quickly. This is completely natural and just means top-up treatments may be needed a little sooner.
  • Lifestyle factors. Regular intense exercise, smoking, and significant sun exposure can all speed up how quickly filler breaks down. Staying hydrated and protecting your skin from UV damage can genuinely help your results last longer.
  • Injection technique. This is where choosing a skilled, qualified practitioner really matters. Tara is an expert qualified practitioner, and aesthetics educator with extensive training in lip anatomy, which means filler is placed precisely and safely — maximising both longevity and your natural-looking result.

What to Expect Immediately After Treatment

Let's be honest with you: your lips may look a bit dramatic straight after the appointment, and that's completely normal. Swelling from needle trauma, some tenderness, and possibly a little bruising are all to be expected in the first 24–72 hours. What you see immediately is *not* your final result — it takes around 2 weeks for everything to settle down fully.

Try to resist the urge to judge the outcome too soon. Most people are delighted once the initial swelling has resolved.

Aftercare: How to Look After Your Lips Post-Treatment

Good aftercare makes a real difference to your healing, your comfort, and the longevity of your results. Here's what we recommend:

  • Avoid touching or pressing your lips for the first 24 hours. We know it's tempting to prod and poke, but please resist — pressing on fresh filler can displace it.
  • Skip intense exercise for 24–48 hours. Increased blood flow and body heat can worsen swelling and bruising.
  • Stay well hydrated.Hyaluronic acid loves water, and keeping hydrated supports your results.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours. Alcohol thins the blood and can increase bruising and swelling.
  • No extreme heat for 2 weeks — this includes saunas, steam rooms, sunbeds, and prolonged sunbathing.
  • Be mindful of blood-thinning medications and supplements (such as ibuprofen or fish oil) where possible, as these can increase bruising. Always check with your prescriber before stopping any medication.
  • Try to sleep on your back on the first night, to reduce pressure on your lips.
  • Arnica cream or tablets can help speed up bruising recovery — we find them genuinely useful.
  • Hold off on lip products (lipstick, gloss, balm) for the first 24 hours to keep the area clean.
  • A follow-up review is always available,so if you have any questions about how things are healing, just get in touch — we're always happy to check in with you.

When to Contact the Clinic

Complications from lip fillers are rare, particularly when treatment is carried out by a qualified practitioner. However, it's important to know what to watch for. Contact us immediately if you experience:

  • Unusual or increasing pain after the first few hours that feels disproportionate to the treatment
  • White or pale patches on or around the lips that don't resolve quickly after applying heat and massage
  • Skin that looks blotchy or mottled — like a patchy, network-style discolouration
  • A cold or numb sensation in the lips or surrounding area

These signs can occasionally indicate that a blood vessel has been affected (known as a vascular compromise or occlusion). This is uncommon, but it's considered a medical situation that needs to be addressed promptly. Don't wait and see — call us straight away. Tara is trained in managing complications and will guide you through exactly what to do.

If you're ever unsure, please just reach out. We would always rather you contact us unnecessarily than feel like you can't ask.
